Supporting Foster Parents - Pilot Project

Supporting Foster Parents Pilot Project

Waypoints is a nonprofit organization that has been providing residential and support services to children, youth and families since 1978. We are very excited to announce that, in partnership with the Newfoundland and Labrador Foster Families Association, Waypoints is now providing support to foster parents through a pilot project funded by the Department of Child, Youth and Family Services. The program is currently being offered in the St. John’s Metro and CBS area with the hope that it will be expanded to other regions in the province.

Through this Pilot, Waypoints offers professional support, hands-on interventions and after hours support/crisis response to 20 foster parents in the St. John’s Metro/CBS area.  The on-call and after-hours support will support foster parents in the moment during a crisis situation, as well as post-crisis debriefing and will include either telephone consultation and direction or in-home intervention.   All referrals to this program will come from the social workers of Child, Youth and Family Services.  In addition to supporting the 20 families, Waypoints will offer monthly training to all foster parents within the designated area.   This is a voluntary program for foster parents who would like more support and want to further increase their professional skills and knowledge.  The program operates from the premise that families know best what supports.  Depending on your needs you may avail of all aspects of the program or you may choose tp avail of he professional development opportunities only. All foster parents engaged in this program will have an individual support plan and monthly case conferences.

This project has an Advisory Committee consisting of the Newfoundland and Labrador Foster Families Association, Waypoints and Child, Youth and Family Services to measure goals and outcomes.
